Student Resources
This section contains information useful to students.
Students start off their Haidong Gumdo studies by learning a set of twelve basic moves. These basic moves are repeated throughout all the forms that are learned as the student progresses. Most classes involve repetition of these basic moves as a means to hone technique.
After the basic moves, the next key element of Haidong Gumdo study, are the Forms (or memorised patterns). These forms or patterns are essentially individual exercises intended to impart to the student the basic techniques of using a sword in combat; how to move the sword and body to achieve the required speed, accuracy and power.
The study of the forms also enables the student to learn how to wield the sword safely. This does not just mean safety to ones self but also safety towards others. This aspect of Haidong Gumdo is very important and is key to enabling students to become more aware of their surroundings in addition to developing their sense of respect towards others.
The first twelve forms are categorised as Two-Handed Sword Techniques or "Ssang-soo Gumbup".
